FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The ‘Survivor’ Strikes At Opening Night!

By Laura Cornman

BEDFORD, PA –

Friday, April 17th marked the official start of the Bedford Speedway’s 2009 racing season.  A full list of events was on hand for the speedway’s opening night: Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, and 4-Cylinders.

Not only was the weather great on opening night, but the turn out was as well. A total of one hundred and seven cars filled the pit area.

The Late Models were first on deck for their feature event.  DJ Troutman led the Late Models to the drop of the green flag.  Twenty five laps of hard racing lay ahead of him.  While Troutman drove off with the lead, Jeff Miller and Jack Pencil battled for the second position.  Soon after Pencil passed Miller, the dreaded caution lights were brought out by Dwayne Taneyhill.  Once again Troutman and Pencil fought for the lead.  As the end of the race neared, the thought of a feature win for Pencil dwindled.  With six laps to go Pencil pulled off a pass against Troutman.  As Pencil pulled away from Troutman his position was solidified as he continued to gain ground on the rest of the field.  Pencil’s luck may have changed as he drove his Late Model who has been nicknamed ‘survivor’ into victory lane!

DJ Troutman, who performed double duty, started on the pole again for the Limited Late Model feature. Troutman and Mike Shoemaker did not hesitate to begin the battle for the lead. Troutman fell off the pace and Shoemaker took command.  Fierce battles took place throughout the field.  Derek Byler and Tim Smith Jr. worked their way through the pack to finish second and third.  Byler and Smith ran out of time as Shoemaker took the checkered flag.

Donald Wyles started on the pole for the Street Stock feature.  Jesse Snyder quickly took the lead, but then lost it to Greg Hainsey.  Hainsey defended his position against Jim Saylor and Darryl Whetstone.  Hainsey fought hard for his position until the checkered flag was dropped.

Jarred Brown sat comfortably on the pole for the start of the Cruiser Hobby Stock feature.  Each position in this field was fought hard for.  The action was really heavy in the center of the pack.  Reed Stickle Jr. challenged Charlie Walter for the lead. Walters took charge while making his way to the front of the field and drove straight into victory lane.

Mike Lauffer claimed a victory in the 4-cylinder class.  However, this win did not come without a fight.  Early on in the race Lauffer and Cindy Rhodes battled for the lead.  Just when it looked like Lauffer was going to victory lane, a caution was brought out with just two laps to go.  Lauffer stayed strong and was victorious.

Heat race winners of the Bedford Valley Petroleum Late Model division included: DJ Troutman, Jeff Miller, and Scott Haus. Mike Shoemaker, Jeff Dick, and Donnie Farling claimed wins during the Miller Auto Parts Limited Late Model heat races.  The TC Race Car Street Stock division heat race winners were Chris Chamberlain and Darryl Whetstone.  Shawn Wyles and Charlie Walter claimed victories during the Ritchey’s Sandblasting Cruiser Hobby Stock division heat races.  The Thomas Chevrolet 4-Cylinder heat race winners were Mike Lauffer and Dwain Rhodes.

Thirty Limited Late Models were on hand, thus a consy was ran.  Ten drivers started; however, only six of them moved on to the feature event.  Those six drivers included: Derek Byler, Donny Hedge, Allen Lemin, Robbie Garlock, Brandon Hoover, and Nathan Lasalle.

On April 24, 2009 the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series will be making a stop at the Bedford Speedway.  The Cruiser Hobby Stocks are also on the agenda for that evening. Be sure to come out and enjoy the action!
