YODER BAGS BEDFORD BUCKS AT BURKET MEMORIAL

May 25th, 2024

Occasional visitor Andrew Yoder drifted into Bedford Speedway and made off with the big win in the annual Turk Burket Memorial Friday night.  The win in the potent  Larry Baer owned 0 car was his first ever Bedford Late Model win and was worth $4000 for the team.

In other action.  Johnny Smith  made a dominating run in the 305 sprints,  and Devin Weyant took the Semi Late win before Dalton Weyant took the Pure Stock closer.

The 35 lap late Model event got off to a rocky start as much of the back half of the field balled up on the first lap eliminating several from the event.

On the restart, Matt Cosner got the jump at the start and took off.   Several early cautions plagued the event, but Cosner zoomed away each time as the Yoder family, Andrew and Dylan battled with each other for second.    Eventually Jeff Rine chased down the Yoders to join in the festivities at that spot.

Dylan Yoder got alongside Andrew several times and Rine did the same to him, but neither could complete a pass as Cosner easily led.  Behind the top 4, action was hot and heavy as the rest if the field ran in a pack switching positions on every lap.  But Cosner;s great ride came to an end suddenly as he developed a flat on lap 21 causing a yellow.  But attention was drawn to Gregg Satterlee, who had run from the back of the pack up to 7th at that point.  At that point, Andrew inherited the lead ahead of Dylan and Rine,

On that restart, Satterlee continued his way up to the front, passing Brian Booze for fourth on lap 24 and setting off after Rine.   Rine put up a serious fight for the spot but Satterlee finally got by on lap 30.  At that point over the last 5 laps Satterlee injected himself into the Yoder family party at the front.

As Andrew Yoder took the checkered flag, Satterlee made a move on Dylan to take second at the line, completing his dramatic run from 21st starting spot.    Behind them, Rine and Jason Covert completed the top 5.

16th starter Bryan Bernheisel took sixth, ahead of Kyle Lee, Chuck Clise, Matt Sponaugle and new point leader Tim Smith.

Cosner, Mike Lupfer and Sponaugle won the heats.

Johnny Smith made it look easy as he led  the distance in the 305 event.  He got the jump on Dale Schweikert  at the start and was never headed in the event which saw only one more caution.  Gobs of late race lapped traffic proved no problem to Smith as he romped to the victory ahead of Ken Duke, John Scarborough, Drew Ritchey and Zach Rhodes.  Smith, Tim Bittner and Dylan Shatzer won the heats.

Subbing for the ailing Bill Replogle in Pork Sell’s 65, Devin Weyandt captured the wild Semi Late event.  It took three tries to get it underway and then five more yellows slowed the field in the first three laps.

Weyandt took the early lead and held off a pesky Kyle Deneen from the start.  Greg Hainsey arrived in that battle late after starting deep in the field but the top three finished in that order.  Dave Brown and Bob Jay, who was involved in one of the early race incidents and restarted last with a seriously beat up car, completed the top 5, Brown and Weyandt won the heats.

Dalton Weyant got by Kyle Becket to lead the Pure Stock finale.  It was a five car breakaway as the evenly matched cars battled at the front with Weyant leading Beckett, Denver Dishong  and Derek Hinish. Dishing and  Derek Hinish got by Beckett on lap 8 and applied pressure but Weyant held them off for the win.  Dishong, Hinish, Darian Ritchey and Barry Clark completed the top 5.  Hinish and Chubby Childers won the heats.  Point leader Childers was involved in one of the early incidents and retired early.
