Brian Lesley Earns First Win at Bedford

By Laura Cornman

BEDFORD, PA –

An exciting five division show was on hand Friday evening.  A total of one hundred and one drivers signed in for the double point affair.  George and Ryan Beckett, a father and son duo, kicked off the evening as they turned a lap while displaying our nation’s flag during the National Anthem.

Chris Chamberlain and Bob Jay captured wins during the TC Race Car street stock division heat races.  The Miller Auto Parts limited late model division ran a sum of three heat races; winners included Brian Lowry, Brian Lessley, and Rick Singleton.  Jeff Rine, Scott Lebaron, and Alan Sagi all claimed victories during the Bedford Valley Petroleum super late model division heat races.  Lou Wannyn and Travis Group both were victorious during the Ritchey’s Sandblasting hobby stock division heat races.

The first main event of the evening was the eighteen lap street stock feature. Greg Hainsey led the pack to the plummet of the green flag. Chris Chamberlain quickly took command.  With only one lap in the books, the caution was brought out when Bob Jay fell off the pace in turn four.  With Chamberlain showing the way, the battle behind him intensified.  Daryl Whetstone and Kerry Molovich battled for the third place position, Whetstone was successful.  Chamberlain drove too hard into turn four and lost control, which sent the former leader to the rear.  Hainsey, now in command, showed the way.  The fifth place position was fought fiercely for by Bob Jay and Jesse Snyder.  Hainsey sternly defended his position against Whetstone.  Donald Wyles joined the battle for the lead. A determined Hainsey held his line and drove straight into victory lane.

Brian Lesley held the pole position for the start of the limited late model feature.  Before the completion of the first lap, a terrible collision occurred on the front stretch.  Although several drivers were involved, Nathan LaSalle took the blunt of the accident.  Once more, Lesley led the way to the cone. Mike Duck challenged Rick Singleton for the second place position, Singleton stayed strong.  Lesley continued to lengthen his lead.  The battle continued between Singleton and Duck for the second and third place positions.  Daniel Cornman, in the fourth place position, followed their lead.  As the laps dwindled the field began closing in on the leader.   With five laps to go, Cornman pulled off a pass against Singleton allowing him to obtain the third place position.  Although Lesley continued to show the way, Duck trailed closely behind.  A caution occurred with two laps to go.  Singleton successfully passed Cornman on the restart, earning him the third place position.  Lesley solidified his position as he drove his black GTO into victory lane for the first time at the Bedford Speedway.

Alan Sagi led the super late models to the drop of the green flag.  Twenty-five laps of hard racing lay ahead of him.  The field quickly filtered out into single file racing.  Steve Everhart closely followed Sagi’s lead.  It looked as though another victory was on Scott Haus’s agenda as he swiftly drove his way to the front.  Jack Pencil, who started thirteenth, fought his way through the pack.  Everhart took command of the race and checked out.  Haus and Pencil fought for the third and fourth positions.  DJ Meyers sat comfortably in the second place position as he followed Everhart.  Haus held the third place position while Pencil occupied the fourth place.  Meyers was able to close the gap between he and Everhart as they approached lapped traffic.  Everhart’s position was set as he drove under the swaying checkered flags.

Charlie Walter led the cruiser hobby stocks to the start of their feature.  Lou Wannyn followed closely behind Walter.  Ryan Beckett swiftly made his way through the pack and passed Rick Potter for the third position.  Walter continued to set the pace.  With seven laps to go, the caution was brought out.  Rick Potter, who was running fifth, began to feel the pressure from the rest of the field as they gained ground.  Beckett battled Wannyn for the second place position.  The caution was brought out when several cars became tangled as they drove out of turn four.  Once more, Walter led the pack to the cone. As he drove off turn four for the final time, he drove into victory lane for the fourth time in a row here at the Bedford Speedway.

Twelve laps was the distance for the 4-cylinder division feature.  Cindy Rhodes held the pole position.  Several cars were quickly tangled between turns one and two.  Joe Means took over the lead.  The rest of the pack fought hard for their positions.  With nine laps to go, another accident occurred between turns one and two.  Nick Iski, Cindy Rhodes, Phil Best, and Juan Ryan were all involved.  Means continued to extend his lead.  Mike Lauffer and Bill Noll battled each other for the second place position.  With three laps to the Means fell off the pace, allowing Lauffer to take over the lead.  Due to lack of time the checkered flag was flown.

Next week is ARCH night at the speedway; any ARCH member will receive $2.00 off the general admission price.  The show will include the super late models, 358 limited late models, street stocks, hobby stocks, and the 4-cylinders.
