Bedford Opening Week….

April 5th, 2015

A long winter officially comes to an end this Friday night as the Bedford Speedway kicks off the 2015 racing season. After completing two practice sessions for drivers over the last two weeks, racing action will commence this week.

In action Friday night at the speedway will be the Late Models, Late Model Sportsman, Semi Lates, Pure Stocks and Four Cylinders.

This Fridays show will be begin the 79th season of racing at the speedway, continuing a tradition dating back to the first race on September 5, 1936. That event, an AAA sanctioned big car race was won by Depression-era racing star Billy Winn. During those early years racing occurred only a few times a year at the speedway, usually as part of the annual Fair Week. Weekly racing started in 1965 when Breezewood’s Roy Morral installed lights and began promoting weekly Super Modified and Late Model events. This season marks the 50th anniversary of weekly racing at the track.

Last year Dylan Yoder capped a race long charge with a late race pass to snag the 2014 Bedford opener. Rick Singleton claimed the Late Model Sportsman win on his way to a dominant season, Jamie Swank survived a wild three pass to snag the Semi Late win, Charlie Walter won the Pure Stock event and Pat Brehm took the Four Cylinder nightcap.

The memory of Walter who tragically passed away over the winter will be honored before the races on Friday night.

Gates will open at 5PM with warmups scheduled for 7PM and racing beginning at 7:30. General admission will be $12.00, with kids 12 and under as always admitted free. Pit admission will be $25.00.
