KNAUB RETURNS FOR REPEAT ACT AT BEDFORD

September 19th, 2015
Having won the biggest Late Model event of the year at Bedford on Labor Day,  Gene Knaub returned for more and achieved the same results as Fallfest kicked off on Friday night.   And for the second show in a row Knaub’s win was in dominating fashion as he ran off from the strong field.  It was his third Bedford win of the season, the opener, the closer and the Labor Day event.
Matt Sponaugle led the Late Model field to the green but it was outside starter DJ Myers who shot by for the lead at the start.  Knaub followed Myers to the front and was all over him for the lead as the field completed the first lap.  After a lap of a side by side struggle,  Knaub took over and never looked back.
Several quick cautions, on lap 3 and again on lap four closed the field and Sponaugle was able to get by Myers for second on that second restart but Knaub was gone.  Jeff Rine moved in for what became a race long battle with Myers, but the man on the move was Dylan Yoder,  streaking through the field from his 14th starting spot.
Sponaugle at times closed on Knaub as the race went ten green laps in a row, but never mounted a challenge.  A quick yellow on lap 17 turned into a longer one when 5 cars piled up in turn 4 on the restart and an infield patron needed assistance,  but on the restart, again Knaub sped away.
Rine got by Myers for third on lap 19 and Myers slowed to a stop on the track three laps later.  On the two lap shootout to the checkered flag,  Knaub again sped away for the win.  Sponaugle was second, ahead of Rine, DJ Troutman, Chuck Clise and Dylan Yoder.  Mike Altobelli Jr, Bryan Bernheisel and Sponaugle won the heats.
All the other divisions ran qualifying events only for their big events on day two of the weekend.
