SHOEMAKER AND DENEEN SHARE SPOTLIGHT AT BEDFORD SEASON ENDER

October 23rd, 2023

The 2023 season finally ended Sunday night with the rain delayed portion of the 6th annual Keystone Cup festivities.  Four happy feature winners emerged in the program, including one first time winner in the event which had originally been scheduled as part of the Friday action.

Shawn Shoemaker rallied late to take the Limited event, while Semi Late rookie Kyle Deneen scored his first ever win in that class.  Other winners were Kyle Beckett in the Pure Stock event before Shawn Smith completed the season with the 4 Cylinder conquest.

By the luck of the draw in the non points event, Devin Weyandt and Shawn Shoemaker brought the Limited field to the green.  Weyandt got the jump at the start and took the initial lead.   Shoemaker filed in behind him in second and shadowed his every move as they pulled away from the pack.

Kyle Hardy, who stayed over after his big Saturday night win, got around Kyle Lear for third on lap 5 but was unable to close on the leaders who got away on each restart after a few early race cautions. Shoemaker was all over Weyandt lap after lap but could not muster a pass until they encountered heavy lapped traffic on lap 19.  When Weyandt hesitated slightly, Shoemaker knifed by and took over the lead.

Shoemaker’s move was well timed as the red flag flew only a lap later for Robby Black, who was slowing on the back stretch and was plowed heavily by Tom Decker in turn three just as the caution flew for him.  Both cars were heavily damaged in the serious collision.

On the restart, Shoemaker zipped away as Weyandt had to hold off Hardy and Lear.  Shoemaker cruised the last 5 laps for the win while Weyandt  was successful  in holding second at the line.   Lear, Hardy and Spike Moore completed the top 5.   Weyandt and Moore won the heats.

Pole sitter Bill Replogle was the early Semi Late leader, but eighth starter Rick Potter arrived and took over on lap 5.  Kyle Deneen, after chasing Replogle, also got by him on that lap and took up the chase on Potter.

Deneen got a good run on Potter by lap 14 and made the move for the lead.  The pair rubbed a bit but Deneen emerged as the new leader.  Deneen had time to think about things as the caution flew with two laps to go, but he sped away on that restart and he held on to the finish to score his first ever Semi Late win.    Potter took second ahead of a late charging Greg Hainsey.  Andrew Stough and Brian Weyandt Jr completed the top 5.   Hainsey and Stough won the heats.

Kyle Beckett started on the Pure Stock pole and led every lap but the pack at the front was wild.  Charlie Clise,  Denver Dishong, Dalton Ritchey and Dominic Weyandt took turns shuffling positions in the chase after the leader.  After a few minor cautions. action was rudely  interrupted on lap 14 when Aiden Replogle has an issue on the back stretch which caused a red, and again a lap later when Weyandt brushed the wall, but Beckett got away on each restart.

Derek Hinish injected himself into the chase as the laps ticked off and he vaulted from fifth to second in the last two laps for the honor of chasing Beckett across the finish line.    Ritchey, Dishong and Clise completed the top 5.   Ritchey, Beckett and Chubby Childers won the heats

Shawn Smith, who won the opening day 4 Cylinder event, managed to book end his season with a win in the last event of 2023.  He led the distance, holding off Wayne Brenize until Brenize retired on lap10.  After that, Smith ran off pretty much unchallenged for the win, trailed by Isaac Kormanski, Brad Marker, Todd Price and Colin Welsh.  Brenize and Price won the heats,
