HART, WEAVER AND SWANGER SCORE AT BEDFORD

July 4th, 2024

Bedford  ran a rare Wednesday event for the Independence Day holiday and it produced three happy winners, one a delighted first timer.  Khi Swanger, on a roll lately, scored a wild last lap win in Semi Late action, Devin Hart took the Limited event and Kasey Weaver completed the evening with his first ever 305 feature win.

After a wild crashfest in the prior event, the Semi Late event went the first  14 laps caution free.  Pole sitter Kyle Deneen took off at the start and built up a commanding lead over a wild six car battle for second. Khi Swanger got himself involved in that mob, running the bottom groove as others ran the outside.

Swanger finally got by the leader of that pack, Travis Calhoun on lap ten, but Deneen was far out ahead.  Fortunes and the direction of the event changed as the caution flew on lap 14, closing up the field.  Deneen, having had the lead all those laps went back to the groove he had used before the caution.  Swanger, who had fought through the pack went back to the bottom and gave Deneen a battle.

The pair went side by side with Swanger edging by on the last lap to take the win.  While the battle for the lead captivated attention, the man on the move was Greg Hainsey.  Hainsey started in the last row of the 17 car field, quietly clawing his way forward from the start in their 21 lapper.  . He made one last move, grabbing third at the line.   Bill Replogle and Dave Brown completed the top 5.  Swanger and Calhoun won the heats.

It was an all 33 front row as Devin Hart and Trent Brenneman brought the Limited field to the green in their 35 lapper.  Hart got the jump at the start and took the lead but Brenneman kept the pressure on.  Jakob Piper ran them down in a few laps and it was a three way scrum at the front.

On the restart after the planned fuel stop on lap 20,  Piper charged around Brenneman and took aim at Hart drawing along side several times.  But Piper’s day ended abruptly as he banked off the front stretch wall on lap 30, causing a caution.  Over the last 5 laps, Hart ran off to a safe distance to score the win.  Devin Weyandt was all over Brenneman for second but he was passed by Casey Steinhoff  on the last lap, falling to fourth.  At the finish it was Hart,  Brenneman Steinhoff, Weyandt and Eric Irvin.  Drake Troutman, Taylor Farrling and Brenneman won the heats.

The 305 event featured an all Weaver front row as Kasey and Kolby led the field.   Kasey took the lead with Kolby in hot pursuit and they ran that way , running the high cushion, tempting fate up there lap after lap until Kolby  brushed the first turn wall on lap 16 and spun.

With the retirement of Kolby, Ken Duke moved up to challenge Kasey but Kasey held on for the win.  Duke settled for second ahead of Zach Rhodes, Dave Grube and Christian Rumsey.   Rumsey, Kenny Heffner and  Austin Reed won the heats.
