Scott Lebaron Drives To His First Feature Win at Bedford
By Laura Cornman
BEDFORD, PA –
Beautiful weather was on hand Sunday evening, allowing fans to round out the 4th of July weekend. A very special thanks goes out to all the men and women who have fought and those who are currently fighting to keep our nation secure.
An immense display of racing was shown as drivers fought for their point positions. Winners of the Miller Auto Parts Limited Late Models were Brian Lowry, Justin Kann, and Rick Singleton. Daryl Whetstone and Brian Duffy both claimed victories during the TC Race Cars Street Stock heat races. The Bedford Valley Petroleum Super Late Models ran two heat races; winners included DJ Myers and Jeff Miller. Bill Replogle and Tyler Ritchey were victorious during the Ritchey’s Sandblasting Cruiser Hobby Stock heat races. Winners of the Thomas Chevrolet 4-Cylinder heat races were Dave Lambert and Paul Crynock Jr.
Matt Cosner led the pack of 29 Limited Late Models up to speed. Mike Duck closely followed Cosner’s trail. With three laps in the book, Cosner fell off the pace on the front stretch, allowing Duck to take command. Rick Singleton followed Duck’s lead. Derek Byler ran sixth while defending his position against Rance Garlock. With Seven laps in the book, Travis Stickley spun in turn four, bringing out the yellow. Singleton captured the lead on the restart. Brian Lowry and Duck followed Singleton’s lead. Within a few laps, four cars became mangled on the back shoot. Those drivers included Travis Cottle, Curtis Heath, Craig Perigo, and Daniel Cornman. Singleton brought the pack back up to speed on the restart. Tim Smith, who started nineteenth, began moving his way through the pack as he looked to make a move against Matt Sponaugle for the sixth place position. Byler and Lowry battled intensely for third place, Byler was successful. Singleton continued to sit at a comfortable distance away from the rest of the field. Due to a right rear flat, Singleton fell off the pace on the back stretch with a mere two laps remaining. Duck moved back into command and led the field to the green white checkered finish. Duck remained strong and claimed his second victory in a row.
Bob Jay was the pole sitter for the start of the street stock feature. Jim Saylor quickly took command while driving out of turn two. Brian Duffy began looking to make a move against Jay for the second place position. Several cars became tangled in turn three, which brought out a caution with only two laps in the book. Saylor led the pack to the restart. Jarrett Walker began making his way through the field as he battled Daryl Whetstone for the third place position. Saylor remained in command while Duffy tried to take the lead. Whetstone joined the three car battle for the lead, meanwhile Saylor remained strong. Saylor and Duffy began racing door to door while battling for control. Walker joined the fight as they drove three-wide into turn two; Saylor continued to show the way. Saylor definitely earned his win as he drove into victory lane.
Scott Rhodes drove the thundering heard of Super Late Models to the drop of the green flag. Randy Burkholder swiftly took command and began distancing himself. DJ Myers and Rhodes battled for the second place position, Myers was successful. With six laps down, a caution was brought out due to debris on the front stretch. Burkholder brought the field back up to pace for the restart. Jack Pencil, who started tenth, began moving forward as he shifted into the sixth place position. Myers looked to the inside of Burkholder and took command. Scott Lebaron defended his third place position against Rhodes. With thirteen laps to go, Myers, the race leader, fell off the pace and glided into the turn three wall. Burkholder was collected in the caution as well. Scott Lebaron, the new race leader, escorted the field to the restart. Pencil began plotting to make a move against Jeff Rhine for the third position. Tyler Hershey and Mike Altobelli Jr. raced hard for fifth place, Hershey held his line. Soon after, Altobelli Jr. fell off the pace and turned into the pit area. Lebaron continued to stretch his lead and solidified his position as he drove into victory lane, earning him his first feature win!
Terry Norris showed the Cruiser Hobby Stocks to the start of green flag racing. Tyler Ritchey took command and began to show the way. Charlie Walter, who started eleventh, drove his way into second position within two laps. Lou Wannyn continued to control the third place position. With three laps in the book, Reed Stickle Jr. suffered a flat tire, which brought out the yellow. Ritchey led the pack to the restart. Walter and Bill Replogle battled side by side for the second place position, Walter stayed strong. Ritchey fought hard against the pressure he was feeling from Walter. Replogle and Wannyn occupied the third and fourth place positions. With four laps to go, Walter pulled off a pass against Ritchey going in to turn one. Walter, now in command, began distancing himself. Walter drove into victory lane for the sixth time this season.
Rusty Garlock held the pole position for the start of green flag racing for the 4-cylinders. Garlock began to lead the way. Mike Lauffer moved into the second place position. Joe Means began challenging Lauffer for his position. The two care battle turned into a three car battle for the lead. Ed Vogel and Cindy Rhodes battled for the third place position, Rhodes was successful. Garlock continued to lead, but began feeling the pressure of Vogel. With the white flag in the air, Vogel took the lead from Garlock which earned him his second win of the season.
Next Friday, July 10th, will be the kids bike races. In addition, the evening will include Super Late Models, 358 Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Cruiser Hobby Stocks, and the 4-Cylinders.
