Capping off a successful 2021 season, Max Blair dominated the 60 lap Keystone Cup event at Bedford Saturday night. In a race that featured excellent racing, a spectacular drive from the back of the field, a statistical ;oddity and post race controversy, Blair was easily the class of the field, leading the last 40 laps and winning by almost 9 seconds or over a half lap. Blair pocketed $25000 for the win.

In support action, former track champion Robby Black returned to take the Limited feature while Drake Troutman won the EMod feature.

Blair’s evening went from bad to worse before it got better. Already running dead last in the earlier dash for the six best qualifiers, Blair’s mount suffered serious mechanical damage and he retired. However under the Bedford Speedway multi day event rule B-4, a qualified driver can start the second day feature in a different car without penalty, allowing Blair to pull out a second car and go. Kyle Weyandt, Mason Zeigler and Jeff Rine were  happy winners as the Keystone Cup weekend began at Bedford Friday night.  Weyandt took the honors in the special Semi Late event, while Zeigler and Rine each won Late Model qualifiers for the big Saturday 60 lap Late Model event.  Then a surprise rain shower moved in and caused the rest of the festivities to be postponed.

    By the luck of the draw in the non point event, Kyle Weyandt started on the pole for the Semi Late event.  He took the lead at the start as the event took a ragged turn in the first few laps.  Seven slowdowns spotted the first six laps of the feature,two for Bill Replogle who was having issues.     The two day Troutman Tribute took an unexpected turn but produced two happy winners in Saturday action at Bedford.     Dalton Ritchey took the Pure Stock event before Kyle Strickler thrilled the fans with his first ever Bedford  win in the EMOD headliner. Those races were run after a surprise rain shower caused a 2 hour rain delay in the program. 

   The two contested events after the rain delay ran the program into curfew violation territory, causing the 305 event and the EMod non qualifier event to be scrubbed.  With no compatible date for the 305s to return, and little desire among the EMod drivers to return for the posted non qualifier purse, it was determined  that the offered money in each class was divided up among all the entrants and the races cancelled. Travis Calhoun and Nick Hoffman were the big winners in the first night of the Troutman Tribute at Bedford Friday night. Calhoun’s Semi Late win was worth $1000 while Hoffman picked up $12,500 for his EMod win.

The Semi Late event started with a bang as a huge pile up on the backstretch marred the first lap. On the restart, Bill Replogle brought the Semi Late field to the green with Calhoun in hot pursuit. The front pair drew a crowd as Bob Jay joined in along with a fast closing Nick Bechtel. Jay threatened for the lead but his Ford died in a cloud of smoke on lap nine

Bechtel moved into second and took up the challenge as the three ran in a knot for several laps. Close racing caused the three to tangle and Bechtel spun on lap 14. On the restart, Calhoun made the move on Replogle and took over. Spike Moore, who joined the crowd late, got by Replogle a lap later and chased Calhoun to the finish. Replogle salvaged third while Dave Brown and Mike Desch completed the top 5. Desch came from 16th in the field. Read more »

After 3 rain delays, 7 happy racers emerged victorious in the huge holiday program Sunday at Bedford, several with exciting last lap passes. Robby Black was the surprise Limited winner after race long leader Clinton Hersh broke with two laps to go in the make up event from three weeks ago while Devin Weyandt took the scheduled event. Nick Bechtel snagged the Semi Late event with a last lap pass before Derrick Hinish replicated a last lap pass in the Pure Stock event. Javid Fairall and Tyler Beckett split the 4 Cylinder events, one also a makeup, and Jeff Paulson took the special Vintage race.

Clinton Hersh split the front row at the start of the first Limited event then led almost effortlessly for the duration. Robby Black emerged from a three car battle to take second on lap six, but he never closed of the distant Hersh. But within sight of victory, Hersh;s mount broke on lap 18, bringing out only the second race caution, giving a surprised Black the lead.

Black then ran off unhindered for the win. Devin Weyandt took second ahead of Brad Feight, Matt Perks and Donnie Farlling, Heats, run back in August, were won by Farlling and Trent Brenneman . Read more »

Although mid week flooding at the track made things look bleak, the Bedford track crew prevailed and had things ready for the annual Labor Day weekend 55 Friday night.

By far the happiest guy on the grounds was Michael Norris, who fought hard to score his first ever Bedford win in the prestigious event. Norris became the 150th different Late Model feature winner at the track and took home $12,000 for his efforts. After Norris scored his first win, Mike Altobelli scored yet another EMod win with late race drama.

Norris and Max Blair brought the stout Late Model field to the green flag and Norris grabbed the early lead. with Blair in pursuit. When Norris stumbled while lapping a car on lap 7, Blair made a wild move and slipped by for the lead. The pair were running in that order when the only yellow in the race flew on lap 11. The USAC wingless sprint cars headlined the Friday show at /Bedford and the star of the show was Alex Bright who devastated the field in their 25 lap event. Also on the program were the visiting Mid Atlantic Modifieds where Mike Altobelli defended the home turf with a come from behind win.

In other action, Nick Bechtel tightened the Semi Late point race with his Semi Late win while Cole Stickel and Charlie Clise took Pure Stock wins.

The wingless event started off wildly when the second row starters got jumbled up in turn one. The action that ensued collected nine cars including Steve Drevici who flipped. Read more »

Two outside divisions made their once a year Bedford visits along with the Bedford EMods and produced three first time winners at the track Sunday night.

Rex King Jr went pole to pole with a dominating performance in the Big Block Modified event for his first ever Bedford win. The most local racer in the Super Sportsman race Craig Perigo took that event before Jacob Whitt ended the evening with his first ever EMod win.

The BB Modified event started off raggedly as several attempts at an initial start were necessary and two more cautions flew before lap three. Rex King Jr got the lead at the start, held on through the early lap chaos and ran off and hid from the field when things settled down after lap 3. Read more »

Tim Smith, in his first start of the season after waiting for his new motor made the debut a good one as he charged from the field to grab the Late Model win Friday night at Bedford. Nick Bechtel tightened the Semi Late point race with his Semi Late win before a wild thunder storm arrived and wiped out the rest of the program.

Front row starter Jeff Miller failed to answer the call to start moving much of the Late Model field forward. New pole sitter Wayne Johnson led the first lap but Chuck Clise, sporting a brand new car took over on lap 2.

Clise moved out to a safe lead as the field strung out behind him. Jeff Rine and Trevor Feathers moved into second and third early but he man on the move was Tim Smith. From his ninth place start,Smith gradually picked his way forward. A serious battle with Feathers moved Smith to third on lap 8. and he set out after Rine. Read more »

Three first time feature winners emerged as the second night of racing closed out the Bedford Fair week Friday night. Travis Stickley made a desperate last lap effort pay off to score his first ever Bedford win before the huge Fair crowd. Laura Chamberlain and Denver Dishong also scored career firsts in Semi Late and Pure Stock action Mike Altobelli was the only repeater as he swept to yet another EMod win.

Nathan Lasalle and Travis Stickley led the Late Model field to the green and danced together the entire 25 laps. Lasalle took the lead at the start but Stickley was all over the leader every lap. With Stickley working the bottom groove, Lasalle had enough momentum on the outside to repel every challenge.

Stickley thought he had a shot as the pair encountered lapped traffic on lap 17, but again Lasalle was up to the challenge and hung on. The event;s only yellow flew a lap later giving the pair a break, but the restart found Stickley again in hot pursuit. Read more »
