PENCIL & SMITH RETURN TO WINNING WAYS

June 18th, 2011

By Dave Harclerode

[singlepic id=41 w=320 h=240 float=right]BEDFORD, PA – Hometown hero Jack Pencil returned to Super Late Model victory lane for the first time in nearly a year at the Bedford Speedway Friday night.  Tim Smith, Jr. also won his first of the season in the Limited Late Models.  Bob Jay picked up his second win of the year in Street Stock action, and Charlie Walter earned his third of the season in the Hobby Stocks.  Mike Lauffer won the special $100 to win 4 Cylinder event.

Jack Pencil has been on top of his game each week in Bedford Super Late Model action, but finding victory lane proved to be a tough task until now.  Pencil started on the pole for the 25 lap main event and led every lap.  The racing surface was blistering fast, and although second place running Dylan Yoder could match Pencil’s speed, he couldn’t find enough to mount any serious challenges.  Yoder, the division’s point leader, holds a slim margin over Pencil and Jeff Rine in the point standings.  It was no surprise that with five to go the running order for the top three was Pencil, Yoder, and Jeff Rine.  Rine started 10th on the grid, and worked hard to get to the front.  Shawn Claar held down the third position for most of the race until Rine made his move with five to go.  Unfortunately for Rine, a blown tire with two to go would send him pitside.  At the end Pencil won his 27th career Bedford feature in the division, followed by Yoder, Claar, Jeff Miller, and Wayne Johnson.  Heats went to Miller and Johnson. DAN STONE WINS SPEEDWEEK FINALE

June 12th, 2011

By Dave Harclerode

[singlepic id=40 w=320 h=240 float=right]BEDFORD, PA –  Dan Stone took the lead on lap 18 of the 40 lap Appalachian Mountain Speedweek’s final show at Bedford to earn $5,000 and his first ever victory at the historic fairgrounds.  Robbie Black went three wide to take the win in the Limited Late Model $1,000 to win special, and Bill Henney won the Street Stock feature event.

In Super Late Model action, Jamie Lathroum set fast time in time trials and started on the pole in the feature.  Lathroum blasted into the lead and kept up a furious pace using the top groove as Dan Stone, Austin Hubbard, and Gary Stuhler battled for the runner up spot.  Lathroum had the field under his thumb until lap 18.  Running on the cushion in turn two, Lathroum’s mount slid sideways in front of the entire pack.  Second running Dan Stone made contact as he flew by, but the damage sustained wasn’t enough to force him pitside.  On the restart it was Stone, Hubbard, Jason Covert, Dylan Yoder and Jack Pencil.  Pencil, who started 15th, had been picking off cars on a steady pace as he charged to the front.  Vic Coffey also was on the move.  Coffey had to resort to a back up car for the feature, relinquishing his 6th starting spot to start last per track rules.  By lap 18, Coffey had moved from last to sixth.  Austin Hubbard had already won at Bedford this season, and he was going to be a handful for leader Dan Stone.  But on lap 28, faint blue smoke rolled out of the 19 and the caution came out as he drifted to a stop in turn 4.  The stage was set for 12 laps of mayhem, and Jason Covert, who assumed second place when Hubbard dropped out, was up for the challenge.  Dan Stone was fast on the bottom, and Covert was left with the high groove to make his move.  Lap after lap Covert would pull even with Stone entering turn three, but Stone was fast and steady.  On the final lap, Covert entered turn three as hard as anyone could.  Even with chunks of the cushion flying through the air, Covert couldn’t make the pass and Stone took the checkers.  Following Covert was Dylan Yoder, Vic Coffey, and Ricky Elliott.  Sixth through tenth went to Jack Pencil, Gary Stuhler, Matt Parks, JT Spence, and Nick Dickson.  Qualifying events went to Hubbard, Stuhler, and Covert. AUSTIN HUBBARD EARNS FIRST CAREER BEDFORD VICTORY

May 31st, 2011

By Dave Harclerode

[singlepic id=38 w=320 h=240 float=right]BEDFORD, PA –  Bedford Speedway’s annual Memorial Day Special was slated for Friday night, but heavy rains postponed the event until Monday evening.  The schedule change brought with it a few invaders, and Austin Hubbard made the most of his rare visit by winning the $2,000 to win Super Late Model main event.  Brian Lowery made his pole starting position pay off by winning the $1,000 to win Limited Late Model feature, and Bob Jay returned to victory lane for the first time since 2008 in Street Stock action.  Charlie Walter picked up his first win of the season in the Hobby Stocks, and Mike Lauffer earned his first win of the season in the 4 Cylinders.

Austin Hubbard came from the 10th starting spot and made a late race pass for the lead to earn his first ever Bedford Speedway Super Late Model win.  Walker Arthur and Jack Pencil brought the field to the green for the 30 lap event, with Arthur out-gunning Pencil for the top spot.  Arthur ran the top groove and pulled out to a comfortable lead until a lap five caution for Brian Booze, Dylan Yoder, and Jeff Miller bunched the field again.  Hubbard had already advanced 5 spots by the time this caution came out, and on the restart he blitzed by Derek Byler and Chuck Clise to slide into the third position.  The trio ran close for most of the race until Hubbard dove under Pencil on lap 18.  Hubbard hounded Arthur for the lead for several laps, and on lap 24 the pair made contact.  Hubbard took the lead and Arthur rode the turn 3 wall for several feet before regaining composure, but Hubbard had to relinquish his lead because a caution came out for a slowing Shawn Claar before the lap was completed.  On the restart, Hubbard powered by Arthur and left everyone in his wake.  Rick Eckert, who slowly worked his way through the field and ran most of the race in 5th  powered past Chuck Clise and third running Jack Pencil on the restart, and overtook Arthur for second on lap 26.  Hubbard though, was too far ahead for Eckert to make any kind of challenge.  At the checkered it was Austin Hubbard by a straightaway, Eckert, Jack Pencil passed Arthur for third with three to go and hung on to finish there, Aurthur fourth, and Derek Byler fifth.  Sixth through tenth went to Mason Zeigler, Jeff Miller, Steve Campbell, Brian Booze, and Chuck Clise.  Heats went to Arthur and Hubbard. DICKSON QUALIFIES FOR SPEEDWEEKS, BLACK WINS LIMITED SPECIAL

May 21st, 2011

By Dave Harclerode

[singlepic id=37 w=320 h=240 float=right]BEDFORD, PA –  For the first time in three weeks, Mother Nature let up just enough to allow the Bedford Speedway to slip in an evening of racing Friday night.  Nick Dickson won the Super Late Model main event, guaranteeing him a starting spot in Bedford’s final leg of the Appalachian Mountain Speedweeks for Late Models in June.  Robbie Black dominated the Limited Late model special $1,000 to win, which was also the first leg of the Bedford/Rock speedway shootout dubbed the BedRock shootout.  Brian Duffy became the first repeat winner of 2011 with his Street Stock feature win, and Chad Gambol picked up his first career Bedford victory in the Hobby Stocks.  Robert Pluta took top honors in the 4 Cylinders.

Nick Dickson, who hasn’t visited Bedford’s victory lane for three years, earned his 6th career victory at the big oval in convincing fashion.  Dickson was overcome with emotion in victory lane as he dedicated the win to young  Tyler Ritchey, a former Bedford Hobby Stock driver who was seriously injured recently in an accident.  He also dedicated the win to his uncle and crew member Rick, who has been very ill the past several months.  Nick started the 25 lap event on the pole, but his win wasn’t a walk in the park.  Fourth starting Jack Pencil charged his way to second, and started reeling in Dickson, who had a healthy lead.  With seven laps to go, the pair encountered lapped traffic and Pencil was able to duck underneath Dickson several times until a lap 21 caution bunched the field.  Dickson distanced himself from the pack and took the checkered with ease.  Pencil finished the race in second, but was relegated to last place when he failed to make weight at the scales following the race.  This put second generation driver Andy Haus in the second position, followed by Jeff Rine, Chuck Clise, and Jeff Miller.  Sixth through tenth was Brian Booze, Dylan Yoder, Scott Haus, Derek Byler, and Matt Parks.  Yoder and Rine won the heats. Bloomquist dominated the event, lapping up to the ninth place finisher. Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV was second followed by Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN; Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN; and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC.

Bloomquist and Shaver started on the front row of the 50-lap $10,000 to win main event. Bloomquist bolted to the lead from the start. He held a six-car length lead over Shaver in the first five laps of the race. Bloomquist started to pick-up the tail-end of the field by lap ten, and had distanced himself further from the battle for the second spot between Shaver and Owens. The first and only caution of the race appeared on lap 16 for a slowing Chris Wall on the backstretch. On the restart, Bloomquist continued his dominating performance as he pulled away from the hotly contested race for second between Shaver and Owens. Read more »

COLEBY FRYE DOUBLES UP BEDFORD OPENER

April 16th, 2011

By Dave Harclerode

[singlepic id=35 w=320 h=240 float=right]BEDFORD, PA –  Coleby Frye made Bedford Speedway’s 2011 season opener a memorable one Friday night by winning both the Super Late Model main event and the Limited Late Model feature.  The Dover, Pennsylvania driver is the first ever to win feature events in multiple divisions on the same date at the 75 year old track, a rare accomplishment in the world of racing.  In Street Stock action, 2010 division champ Bill Henney started the season off on the right foot by winning both his heat and the feature event.  Travis Group triumphed in Hobby Stock action, and Andrew Pluta capped the cold evening with a 4-Cylinder win.

Frye blistered the field to earn his third career Bedford Super Late Model win.  Coleby picked up his first two Bedford Super Late Model wins last season, including the huge Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek finale.  Quickly becoming a fan favorite, Frye started in the third slot for the 25 lap main event.  Frye battled for the top spot with DJ Myers and Jeff Miller for several laps until he broke free from the pack and easily held a several car length lead for the remainder of the race.  A late race caution for 4 time champ Scott Haus bunched the field and put second place running DJ Myers on Frye’s bumper, but when green flag racing resumed Frye was unstoppable.  Myers finished a distant second, with Miller, Gene Knaub, and Jack Pencil rounding out the top five.  Dylan Yoder won the hard charger award and finished sixth, and Nick Dickson, Greg Fetters, Jerry Bard, and Matt Parks completed the top ten score card.  Newcomer Gene Knaub and Myers won the heat events.
